Breathe

"Breathe, breathe you can do this just breathe. Don't
you dare cry, don't let him see you cry. Just walk in,
that's it Maria ....walk.
"Hi Liz I'm back and ready for duty" Maria said as she
walked in to the Crashdown.
"Maria, you're back"! Liz was so happy to have Maria
back life hadn't been easy after breaking up with Max
... Sure Liz had Alex but it wasn't the same. Alex still
had Isabel, even if they were keeping their
relationship on the down low. Maria a least could
really understand where Liz was coming from since
Michael broke up with her too. Maria knew the pain of
losing your first real love.
The hurt of having to see them almost every single
day and knowing you can't be with them was unbearable.
Liz did her best not to make any contact with Max in
or out of the school , that meant someone else had to
serve him when he came to the Crashdown. This was how
Liz dealt with her pain, by staying as far away as
possible. Maria on the other hand couldn't stay away
from Michael. Maria tried to talk to Michael every
time she saw him but he always had something major to
do. Maria was getting nowhere and the feeling of hurt
was getting deeper.
Maria's luck was looking up for <so she thought>, she
finally got Michael in a corner on the last day of
classes. Michael was just about to make another
excuse, but Maria was getting tired of chasing him
down. Maria's question came in the form of a shout
"Michael why are you doing this to US"! . The
courtyard was quiet Maria's voice was the only sound
to be heard, all the other students wanted to hear
what was going on. Michael just looked at Maria with
such pain in his eyes, he wanted to say something but
he just couldn't. Maria went on yelling " I love you
and you love me. You promised me NOTHING or no one
would come between us. NO ONE means YOU too"!. Maria
stood there bearing her heart and frustration in front
of all West Roswell High, but she didn't care anymore.
It was Michael she was talking to and it was Michael
she wanted any answers from. Michael kept looking at
her then he did the unthinkable, he turned and walked
away.
Maria gasped, well she wasn't the only one so did half
the school, Liz & Alex came to her at that moment.
Maria finally broke down and cried, once the tears
started they just wouldn't stop. Liz & Alex took Maria
home where she walked right into the arms of her
mother. Amy hated seeing her baby this way miserable,
but she know Maria need to release at least some of
the hurt. Through the sobs Maria asked her mother "
How could he leave me; How could someone who say's
they love you leave you, how"! Amy looked in the eyes
of her one true pride & joy and told her that she had
asked herself the same question when Maria's father
left.
With tears in her eyes Amy went on to say " Everything
in me hurt to the point where I couldn't even breathe,
but I had you"!. Maria looked at her mother, really
LOOKED for the first time in her life Maria saw her
mother not as a mom but as woman. A woman who truly
knew what it meant to lose. Amy went on to say " I had
you pumpkin, you forced me to realize that your father
maybe gone from our lives but I was still breathing; I
was still alive, the world hadn't stopped; From that
moment of thought I knew I was going to be all right
and so will you".
Maria laid back down in her mom's lap, willing herself
to breathe. Laying there Maria thought to herself {
I'm still alive, I'm not dead just hurting. I think I
know your reason why Michael, but knowing doesn't get
passed the pain your fears are causing us }. Amy
looked down at her daughter and said " Come lets go to
your room, it will be more comfy laying on a bed then
on me". Maria got up, walked to her room and straight
to her bed. Thinking her mom was going to leave her,
she turned to say "Goodnight" but Amy climbed into bed
with her. Wrapping Maria up in her arms Amy said "
Think I'm leaving you in a time like this, well think
again pumpkin head". Maria smiled for the first time
in months and fell fast asleep knowing her mom was
right there.
In the morning Maria woke up to the smell of pancakes
& sausages plus the voices of her mother talking to
someone. Maria got out bed to see who it was and to
fill her empty stomach. For a heart stopping moment
she thought it could be Michael. But as she got
closer to the voices, she realized the voice she
thought that could be Michael's was none other then
her mom's god-sister, Amber Kerwood.
Amber Kerwood was an average height woman of petite
build. Amber had the look of a print model, but her
passion was for trucking. The open road was the life
for Amber she loved knowing somebody in all the fifty
states. As Amber was on her way back home to Texas she
got a cell phone call from Amy in need of some
sisterly talk. Amy told Amber the whole sad situation
with her daughter's ex-boyfriend and his "commitment
issues". In the middle of their discussion Amber
suggested that Maria come stay with her in Texas for
awhile. Amy told Amber thanks but she knew how much
Amber loves being on the road, but Amber wouldn't hear
of it. Amber told Amy that she had to stay at home to
get something's fixed, Amber's crazy seventeen year
old brother Josh was acting up again and the Folks (
Amber's parents) wanted big sis to talk some sense
into the boy.
So with a plan insight Amy waited for Amber to get to
her house. About the time Amber finally got there,
Maria had just woken up to see her sitting down to a
nice plate of pancakes & sausages. "Aunt Amber what
are you doing here" Maria asked. "Well sugar aren't
you a sight for sore eyes, come give you Auntie a hug"
Amber said. Maria went over to her Aunt an give her a
hug while looking at her mom for answer to her
question. Amy spoke up to tell Maria that her Aunt was
here to take her to Texas for a month or two.
After Maria got over her shock she found her tongue to
say " A whole month, have you both forgotten I have a
job"? "No we have not forgotten you have a job Maria,
but I think the Crashdown can survive without you for
awhile; Besides I think you need this" so with that
Amy had her way and Maria was gone.

Deal

Michael awoke with this feeling of unease something
just wasn't right this morning. Then it hit him all
the pain and anger he felt from the other day at
school. Why couldn't he just tell Maria what was
going on in his mind {Do you even know what is going
on in here } Michael looked around his apartment but
he was alone so where the heck did the voice come from
{ I'm the One within} there was the voice again {
listen you idiot I'm in your head } now Michael knew
he was official insane he was hearing a voice in his
head who thought he was an idiot.
Michael shook his head, at least he didn't have to
face Maria today he had the day off { chicken } I'm
not a chicken, hold up I'm now answering the voice {
why not I'm here } you're not here I'm just tired {
right you're just tired let's believe that shall we }
OK I need to lie down . Thinking to himself 'I did the
right think for you Maria' { you didn't do anything
for her } yes I did { no you didn't, you did it all
for yourself ! }
Why in the hell would I put us through this kind of
pain for myself { you're of afraid Maria not of your
powers } that makes no sense { it should it's your
feelings } I love Maria , it's my powers I'm afraid of
I don't even know how to use them { you maybe afraid
of your powers but your fear of Maria is greater }
can't believe I'm asking, but how so? { You feel
she'll start thinking of you as Mickey} What do you
mean by Mickey { you know Hank's little loser Mickey,
the one who doesn't know how to do anything right
Mickey } I'm not Mickey, don't call me that { but
that's how you feel Michael or isn't it Mickey} I
SAID DON'T CALL ME THAT I'M NOT A LOSER { damn, you
ain't gotta yell }
Well then don't call me that, I'm not a loser I just
don't know what to do { yes you do , you've always
know what to do , you're just scared to do it }
Being a good guy like Max isn't me. I don't know how
to do the right things, I just hurt people { you are
good, you're not Max you're Michael and Michael does
good } But what if I hurt her with my powers, what if
I hurt someone innocent what would she think of me !.
What would she think of me, I don't know if I could
live with her thinking less of me { Any other woman
would have left you by now with half the bull you put
her through she loves you, you know that you're just
being an ass }
Well what's done is done she'll never take me back now
{ no its not get on your knees and beg } I want to
do what's right learn how to use these damn powers,
make a good living and make her proud { you could do
all that Michael with Maria right there beside you,
you know you'll never be happy without her } You're
right { no, we're right }. Michael got off the couch
with a new sense of purpose, he looked at the clock it
was 3:00 in the afternoon. Damn he had spent the
entire morning talking to himself, he laughed funny
thing he didn't feel so sad anymore.
Michael made it to Maria's house , he was ready to say
he was sorry and beg for her forgiveness. He knocked
on the door and Maria's mom answered. " You have a lot
of nerve coming here after what you put my daughter
through" Amy was not in a good graces with Michael. "
I know what I did was wrong, Maria deserves more but
I love her and I'll do anything to get her back"
Michael hoped Amy would let him see Maria. Amy could
see Michael was serious, so she saw no point in lying
to him " Maria's gone to Texas , and she won't be back
for at least a month" "She's gone , a month, Texas"
Michael couldn't believe this , he had to tell her how
he felt before it was to late.
Amy had an idea what Michael was thinking " Let her be
Michael, she needs time and so do you" Michael didn't
know what to think now, maybe this is good he
thought { maybe, it does give you time to practice
using your powers } Yeah I could practice , show her
what I could do when she gets back. But a whole month
without her { hey you were contemplating a whole
lifetime you could wait } Michael took strength in his
new idea and said goodnight to Mrs. Deluca .

They had been driving for the last 3 hours when Maria
finally took notice of the direction they were headed
in. "Um Aunt Amber wouldn't Lubbuck,Texas be is the
South East of Roswell"? "Yes it would Maria" "Then why
are we heading west"? "That's a good question Sugar,
it's about time you realized we're not going to Texas"
"Then where the heck are we going"? Maria asked Amber
.... Amber looked at her godneice with a sad smile then
asked "Do you really want to go to Texas and don't lie
to me either?
Maria looked at her aunt and said "No, but I thought
you needed to go to Lubbuck cause of Josh"? "Nope, my
baby brother is just raising hell for the pure
enjoyment of watching our folks squirm". " I just let
you and your mom think I was taking you to Texas cause
I didn't want your mother to know that I'm taking you
to LA. just yet".
"LA, I've never been there, but wait why LA"? "Well
Maria honey I don't really think you wanted to spend a
whole month with another teenage boy after what just
happened to you, and LA has man that I WANT to see"!.
"So Aunt Amber , you've gotta a man" Maria asked with
a little smirk. "Yes I've gotta men, that adores me"
"Good at least one of us is adored"! Maria stated.
"Maria you'll be happy I know you will, when it's the
ONE he'll ALWAYS come back" "I wish I could be as
confident as you". "Don't worry about it now just know
when we get to LA. Jack and I are gonna show you a
great time" Amber told Maria. Maria just sat back and
did her best to remember what a great time was instead
of some spike haired boy back home in Roswell.
Sometime later in California , when Maria woke up from
a deep sleep she never knew she need. She looked round
to find herself in what she believed to be LA.. But
where were the celebrities, the expensive cars and
where the heck were the 'HOT BODIES'!. Amber heard
Maria wake, "well sugar, we'll be at Jack's house in
two hours". Maria's couldn't believe she been out
that long last she remembered they were in San Diego.
Maria went back to looking at her surroundings to find
that California was not what she expected it would be.
Amber started to tell Maria about her first time in
LA, how she was shocked not to find dead bodies or
hookers on ever street corner. Amber laughed at the
look Maria was giving her. "Sugar, I really had this
place pegged wrong, it turned out to be just an
ordinary town with somewhat ordinary people". Amber
went on " When I finally found the drop off place for
the goods I was carrying , the foreman had the nerve
to tell me I was late by ten minute's ! Maria stated
that he was a man and that men are never happy.
Well this guy was not the problem it was the owner of
the merchandise that was mad. He was livid, I tried
to tell him that I'd never been to LA. I didn't know
where the heck I was going, but Jack Delfehr wasn't
listening kept going on about his fiancée would not
be happy."Wait a sec this isn't your Jack is it"?
Maria asked "One in the same" Amber replied. "If he
was to marry someone else how did you two get
together"? Maria asked "Well if let me finish my story
I'll tell you, now hush" Amber replied.
Now where was I , oh yes it seems I had been carrying
the bridal parties gowns and the wedding was in less
then an hour so every minute counted. He went to the
back of my truck and opened the door to get the gowns
by himself, which was not a good idea on a count of
the door locks being tricky. You see if you don't keep
the door open with a little hinge I put in , you could
lock yourself in. So I went after him trying to inform
him of the door but no he still wasn't interested in
listening, so he got himself locked in. All I could do
was laugh myself silly for all his bravado he was
afraid of the dark!.
I couldn't in all honest leave him in there, so while
the foremen sent his men to get some tools to open the
door. I went into the back of the truck through that
small window behind you. When I made it in I opened
the flashlight I always carry in the glove
compartment, to find Jack sitting next to a pile of
boxes with head in his hands. What can I say I'm
sucker for sad looking guys! He looked up and saw that
it was me which didn't make things easy .
"You know this is all your fault, if you were just
here on time Helen wouldn't be working herself mad"
Jack said "Oh so it's my fault that your girlfriend is
losing it, may I remind you that I was only ten
minutes late" I replied " That doesn't matter ever
minute counts Helen wants a perfectly smooth wedding
and now that's not going to happen cause I'm stuck in
this dump on wheels" Jack answered "Well you know this
dump on wheels got your damn dresses here in the first
place and if you had listened to me you wouldn't be in
here" Amber sounded off "And second I didn't have to
crawl through that tiny window to see how you were
doing" Amber was on a roll " And third I don't have to
put up with this kind of high handed treatment I'm
outta here"!
With that Amber was on her way out when Jack called
back "I sorry it's just that I haven't had the best of
months and I'm taking it out on anyone and everyone"
At this point I wondered to myself should I turn
around or just keep going, but as you can guess Maria
I turned around. I said to myself what could it hurt
to listen to him, heck I had nowhere else to go. "Look
I really don't want to get married, I haven't told
anybody this and I don't know why I'm telling you but"
Jack said "But I'm someone you'll never see again so
why that heck not, right"? I said
So Jack went on to tell me how Helen's parents and his
parent's had decided long ago that their kids would
marry when Helen turned twenty-seven. Which she did a
month ago, so the wedding was on. Jack had liked
Helen growing up but she was more family to him then
'Wife Material', but how do you tell your family who
have been waiting for this day to come that you have
other plans for your life. Every time he tried to
explain to his father that he wasn't in love with
Helen his dad would say "Love isn't important son
Delfehr's have always married Delheigl's and that's
that".
So he committed himself to marriage, I felt so sorry
for him. Amber turned and asked Maria "Can you imagine
being forced to a life you really don't want, to be
with someone your not in love with forever"? " Yeah I
can" Maria whispered. "Well I did too so that's why I
did what I did next" Amber said. Jack hadn't noticed
when I moved up to him, he was so engrossed in his
tale. But he did see the look in my eyes, "Why do you
look like you care" "Maybe cause I do" I said. Then I
kissed him, boy did that take him by surprise. And it
surprised me too, I'd never realized how lonely I'd
been and how it felt as if I belonged in his arms. I
knew that I couldn't let him get married, I didn't
care how selfish I was thinking. Him holding me felt
to good to lose and he had to have felt something too
cause he didn't let me go. We just looked at each
other with such longing, that's when the door opened.
Standing beside the foremen with a shocked look on her
face was Helen.
"Well here we are" Amber stated "Wait a minute what
the heck happened"? Maria asked "Well Helen felt
disgraced so she called off the wedding and ended up
marrying Jack's cousin who'd been in love with her for
years" Amber explained "And Amber and I have been
together every since" Jack said scaring Maria by
showing up out of nowhere. " Hello handsome" Amber
called out " Hello yourself beautiful" Jack replied.
Maria thought to herself handsome wasn't the right
word to describe Jack he was a God!. At 6'4 240lbs
easy he was a work of art in motion. Jack had dark
sandy blonde hair, carmeled colored eyes and up turned
lips that begged to be kissed. So that's exactly what
Amber did when she got out of the truck.
Jack's house was awesome it was like most of the
house's in his area, Spanish styled. The thing that
set his house apart from all the other house's, his
house was a sea breeze blue color while the others
were sandy beach.. It even felt like that when Maria
walked in, she noticed how everything had a laid back
theme . Maria wonder how her Aunt could every go on
the road when she had this place and that man to
attend to. She for one would never let a prize like
Jack out of her sight.
That night when Maria was settled in and her mother
was informed of her real where abouts. She set out to
get some answers from her aunt. Amber was in the
kitchen making herself a late snack, while Jack was
fast asleep cause he had a early morning meeting {
Turns out he's a stockbroker }. "Aunt Amber" "Yes
sugar" "Why aren't you and Jack not married, if you
don't mind me asking" "No I don't, well you see it's
not an easy thing for me to talk about" "I find that
hard to believe" they both laughed it was well know
that Deluca's and Kerwood's could talk tell the cows
came home.
" Jack and I have been together for over three years
now and I love more then I love myself sometimes" " So
what's the hold up , doesn't Jack love you"? Maria
asked "Oh he loves me, he's even asked me to marry him
twice" "It's just that I 'm scared of not being good
enough for him, what if I can't fit into his daily
life, what if I can't cope in his society, what if I
end up shaming him in front of his peers"! Amber was
in tears now.
"Aunt Amber from what I've seen of Jack today is he
loves you, not who you think you should be but of who
you are" Maria said. Maria went on " You just can't
hold up your true happiness cause your scared of what
could happen, you've gotta have faith in your love".
Amber looked at her niece " When did you get to be so
smart" " I'm not, I just know real love deserves a
chance" Maria replied.
Amber smiled thanked her niece and told her " Go to
bed sugar, or we won't get to see the sights of LA
tomorrow" . The next morning Maria found Jack and
Amber happily talking about what they plan to do.
"Morning, I thought you had a meeting Jack" ? Maria
asked " I did, you wonderful girl , but I now have
more important things to do " Jack replied. " Will you
like to tell her or should I " Jack asked Amber "Oh
why don't you honey" Amber said "It's like this kiddo
your Aunt and I are getting married impart thanks to
you". Maria couldn't believe it " When did this all
happen" ?. "I was on my way to see what was taking
Amber so long getting her snack, cause I couldn't
sleep, when I over heard what she was saying about not
marrying me" Jack explained. "I never told Jack why I
wouldn't marry him, I just said I wasn't ready" Amber
chimed in. " So now when is this wedding gonna take
place" Maria asked " How about as soon as possible,
like before the month is over" Jack stated. " Maria
would you do me the honor of being my head brides
maid" " Oh Aunt Amber I 'd love to " Maria said while
giving Amber a big hug.
The month flew by so fast Maria couldn't believe it
was time for the wedding and time for her to head back
to Roswell. Her mother came two weeks before the
wedding, Amy was to be the matron of honor. After the
wedding Amber found Maria fighting with Josh about the
do's and don'ts of dating , to tell her thank you for
giving her the courage to believe in her love for
Jack. "Look Maria you told me to have faith in my love
, and I think you should too" "This Michael of yours
just might be as scared as I was, it's hard to think
of letting down the one person you love the most" "
But just like Jack did you have to let him know where
you stand and that you don't plan to wait forever" "
Now I've got to get back to my future, cause he's
waiting" Amber said then she was gone.
The trip home was not as bad as Maria thought it might
be, she and her mom hadn't been on a road trip in a
long while. Maria was going back to Roswell with a
renewed sense of self. She knew what she wanted out
of Michael, but she wasn't about to just throw herself
at him either. If thing's were ever to happen with
them they were gonna have take it slow. His rejection
still hurt but she had faith in their love. Besides
only time will tell what could happen.

New Beginnings

One month later outside the Crashdown Maria looked
like a changed woman, yes a woman cause she didn't
feel like a little girl anymore. She turned towards
her mother and said "Thanks for the ride, I'll most
likely get a ride back from Liz or Alex". "Are you
sure you're ready to go back, I know Michael's in
there" Amy asked "Yeah I'm fine mom, One breath at a
time remember" Maria replied. "All right pumpkin, I'll
see you later" Amy said as she restarted the car .
"Bye" Maria said and turned to walk into the
Crashdown. Maria thinking to herself "Breathe,
breathe, you can do this just breathe. Don't you dare
cry, don't let him see you cry. Just walk in that's it
Maria... Walk. "Hi Liz I'm back and ready for duty"
"Maria, you're back"! Liz cooed. Maria relied "Yeah
I'm back".
Michael didn't have to look at her he could feel her ,
she was back. Now if only he could keep breathing long
enough to open his mouth this time. To tell her what
he has been waiting a whole month to tell. Maria had
just got out of the bathroom, when she saw Michael
waiting for her. She looked at him, it had been so
long but she still had to tell herself to breathe.
Michael thought to himself 'God she's really here in
front of me not some figment of my imagination', but
he still had to tell himself to breathe......
"Hi" Michael didn't know what else to say but he knew
he had to say something. "Hi" Well at least this is a
start Maria thought. "How have you been" Keep going
Michael she isn't ignoring you that's good. "Is that
what you really want to ask me"? Maria was getting a
little antsy, this going around in circles was not
going to get to the point. " No, I .. I am sorry"
There I said it, now will she believe me. "Sorry for
what, Michael". OK she isn't going to be easy on me,
oh well she has her right. "I'm sorry for making you
unhappy, sorry for messing up your life, sorry for
making you cry, but most of all I'm sorry for turning
away"!. "Well now that was a mouthful, but you didn't
ruin my life, you didn't always make me unhappy, you
didn't MAKE me cry, and you didn't turn away you ran
away"!.
Damn this feels good, I'm not as scared as I thought
I'd be. "You do know me , don't you" Michael thought
she knows I ran, but she can't know why. "I thought I
knew you Michael but I don't, I thought I knew life,
love but I don't know anything" Maria stated. " I need
for you to understand why I ran, this isn't easy for
me to say but I'm scared of YOU". "What, you're
scared of ME" Maria didn't expect to hear this from
Michael , he was serious she scared him!.
Maria looked him straight in the eyes and asked " Why
are you scared of me"? . "I'm afraid that one day
you'll see me as a loser or worse you'll look at me
with shame" Michael was hoping she could really feel
his fear. "I didn't know that this was your fear, I
had thought you left me cause of your powers". "That's
what I tried to tell myself too, but it's you; You
scare me cause you make me feel like I could do
anything but what if I fail, would you still care"?.
"Michael don't you know I have those same thoughts,
what I can't make you happy, what if I'm not enough,
would you stop caring"?. "I guess we both are scared,
of how the other feels". "I guess so" .
Michael thinking to himself { maybe things between
